Cleaning from the top down sounds simple, but there's a whole science behind doing it right. In my experience as part of the Shades Cleaning team, I've seen the same mistakes repeated time and again — dirty water dripping onto clean glass, wrong cloths leaving lint, too much soap creating film. Here are 10 tips focused on technique and sequence that will transform the way you clean windows, whether you're doing it yourself or supervising a cleaning crew.
Always Clean Top to Bottom — Without Exception
This is the most fundamental rule of window cleaning. Water, cleaning solution, and loosened dirt all flow downward due to gravity. If you start at the bottom, any work you do on the upper sections will drip dirty water onto your already-clean lower glass. Always begin at the top of the frame and sill, then the top of the glass, working methodically downward in every stage of cleaning.
Pre-Rinse Exterior Windows Before Washing
Outdoor windows — especially in Dubai — collect heavy layers of pollution, bird droppings, and fine desert sand. If you apply soapy water directly to a heavily soiled exterior pane, you'll quickly clog your washer and squeegee with grime. Give the outside glass a pre-rinse with plain water first to remove the bulk of the loose dirt, then apply your cleaning solution for a much more effective wash.
Treat Indoor and Outdoor Glass Differently
Indoor glass mostly collects fingerprints, dust, and cooking vapours — it needs lighter pressure and a gentler solution. Outdoor glass faces environmental grime, UV exposure, and mineral deposits from rain or condensation. Use a stronger solution (more soap, or a vinegar blend) on exterior panes and a milder touch for indoor surfaces to avoid over-saturating seals and interior finishes.
Change Your Bucket Water Frequently
One of the most overlooked mistakes is continuing to work with dirty water. Once your bucket water turns murky, you're not cleaning — you're redistributing grime across the glass. For a home with several windows, change your cleaning water at least every three to four windows, or any time you can see visible debris floating in the bucket.
Don't Over-Apply Cleaning Solution
More soap does not mean cleaner windows. Excess cleaning solution creates a heavy foam that's difficult to remove completely with a squeegee, and as it dries it leaves a cloudy, soapy film across the glass. Two to three drops of dish soap in a full bucket of water is all you need. The solution should feel slightly slippery, not sudsy.
Use a Dedicated Washer/Scrubber Sleeve
A microfiber washer sleeve (also called an applicator or mop) is far more effective than a sponge or cloth for applying cleaning solution. The sleeve covers more area in a single pass and its texture agitates and loosens dried grime from the glass surface without scratching it. Keep the sleeve clean — rinse it out between windows so you're not transferring dirt from one pane to the next.
Wipe Squeegee Blade After Every Single Pass
Each pass of the squeegee picks up dirty water and grime from the glass. If you don't wipe the blade between passes, that dirt gets dragged back across the next section, leaving streak lines. Fold a clean dry microfiber cloth in your free hand and quickly wipe the rubber blade after every sweep. This one habit alone will dramatically improve your streak-free results.
Detail the Edges and Corners with a Damp Cloth
A squeegee cannot reach the very edges and corners of a window frame — water tends to pool in these spots and dry into visible marks. After finishing with the squeegee, use a clean damp microfiber cloth to carefully wipe all four edges of the glass, and then follow with a dry cloth to absorb any remaining moisture. This finishing step is what creates that truly professional, zero-streak look.
Clean Window Tracks and Channels Regularly
Window tracks accumulate an astonishing amount of dust, dead insects, and grime — especially in Dubai's dusty environment. Blocked or dirty tracks can cause windows to slide poorly and introduce dirt back onto clean glass every time you open them. Use a vacuum with a brush attachment followed by a damp cotton swab or old toothbrush to thoroughly clean out the channels before washing the glass above.
Establish a Regular Cleaning Schedule
The easiest windows to clean are the ones that are cleaned regularly. In Dubai's dusty climate, a monthly light clean prevents heavy build-up of sand, minerals, and urban pollution. Windows that haven't been cleaned for several months may require soaking, scraping, or professional-grade cleaning agents to restore their clarity. Setting a consistent maintenance schedule keeps the job manageable and your windows looking their best all year round.
